The latest news is that PokerStars and Full Tilt players are suffering at the hands of a Malware problem called Win32/Spy.Odlanor which allows hackers to view your cards.
The spyware is said to have been in circulation since March 2015.
The malware can be installed by downloading certain programmes such as Tournament Shark, Poker Calculator Pro, Smart Buddy and Poker Office to name just a few.
ESET, a security company, discovered the malware. Apparently the malware works by taking real time screenshots of your game which gives the person viewing the screenshots not only your hole cards but also your username.
Robert Lipovsky from ESET said "We have seen this trojan masquerading as a number of benign installers for various general purpose programs, such as Daemon Tools or uTorrent. In other cases, the spyware is installed through various poker-related programs". ESET offer a free 30 day free trial and offer their services on Windows, Mac, Linux, Mobile and multi-device. If you don't have any anti-virus software on your computer, it's recommended you find one as soon as you can.
I have seen on Full Tilt and PokerStars (either one or both of them) that you can remove yourself from a player search. I recommend that everyone does this as, if you do unknowingly have the malware installed, the hacker won't be able to find you.
There is also a newer version of the Odlanor malware around called Win32/PSWTool.WebBrowserPassView.B. This malware is capable of extracting your passwords.
The majority of infected players are in Eastern Europe of the several hundred players that have been affected.
