Normally, announcing who will be playing at what table is a formality and not something to make the news. That is unless it's a $300,000 buy in and two players who hate each other are in the mix.
For the most part, the draw was unamusing. Table 3 looks to be a good one with Phil Hellmuth, Justin Bonomo, Isaac Haxton, Tom Marchese and Jason Les all at the same table. Table 7 also looks interesting with Phil Laak, David Peter, Erik Seidel, Phil Galfond and Connor Drinan.
But, the real table to watch will be table 5!
Why you ask?
Not only is it a tough table with Antonio Esfandiari, Andrew Robl, Brian Rast and Ben Tollerne, it's also got the makings of a popcorn eating fest.
Two players – Jason Mercier and Doug Polk have been seated right next to each other. If you don't know, these two don't like each other all that much. Polk, who started the poker video site – Upswingpoker.com was caught profiling Mercier as a “bad reg.”
On his site, people can pay a fee to watch Polk and his friends play high stakes games online. During one session, viewers caught notice of Polk tagging Mercier as a bad player. The Twitter universe went wild with this news and the two took their fight to the social platform as most do these days.
Mercier fired the first shot by calling out Polk saying he can only play NL Hold Em, and can't even play it well. Essentially saying to Polk – anytime anywhere.
Merciers crew even came to his defense by saying Polk was a bad player and welcome at any game. And of course what would a Twitter fight be without Daniel Negranue sticking his face in it by saying (paraphrased) – if they had a tool of the year award, Polk would win.
The kicker was Doyle Brunson stepping in and inviting Polk to play a heads up match with one his friends. Yes, Doyle Brunson has a Twitter account. The fact he uses it may be more surprising.
More swings were thrown as Polk and others bickered back and forth about a post Negreanu made saying poker is much easier than it was years ago. This statement didn't sit well with some and they all felt the need to make their opinions aware. Polk being one of them.
Needless to say, table 5 will be interesting to watch. Is it coincidence the two feuding players were seated next to each other? My guess is absolutely not. And why would they not do this, it makes for great viewing. Have to get those ratings up somehow.
You can watch a live stream with a 30-minute delay on CBS and Twitch.tv.
