Back Poker Vacations

It's fun to take a vacation from playing poker.

Doyle Brunson once admitted that poker could become an addiction -- even he felt addicted sometimes, he said -- but most players don't take that addiction seriously until it hits them.

I have a confession to make:

I have probably spent more hours playing poker than I should have.

Bad me. I deserve to be whipped with a wet noodle!

The reason I spend so much time playing poker is because it's FUN. You can discuss politics, religion, sex, bad beats and even tell jokes at a poker table without anybody taking offense. Well...

...sometimes a person WILL take offense, but you just ignore him as an idiot.

Poker players can change from winners into losers. That happens despite the person's skill. The cards just change and refuse to give you a break. When that happens...

...it's time to take a vacation.

For the past couple of weeks, I have refrained from playing poker and it has done wonders for my writing. I sold an article on St. Kitts to Elks Magazine which has a circulation of over one million.

I wrote a letter to Doyle Brunson, trying to get him interested in a poker novel I am writing that has movie possibilities.

I even visited with Alice and her husband in our apartment complex in Charleston, S.C. Alice is a gregarious woman with plenty of stories. She loves wine and smoking cigarettes and you interrupt one of her stories at your own peril.

She and my daughter Rossana are great friends and she even tolerates Rossana's boy friend, Ken. Sometimes.

I have been gearing up for a trip by car that will take me to Pennsylvania where my brother, Legs, lives. We will probably visit The Meadows, his favorite gambling palace in Washington, PA., or the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, PA. And we will spend some time in his back yard basking in the Pennsylvania sun and watching his grapes grow.

My brother makes wine, using the same recipe our late father used when he grew his own grapes and made wine. Our family home is less than 500 yards from where my brother lives. You can see the house from his back porch.

Vacations are good for the soul and wonderful for a person's spirit. I find myself thinking of St. Kitts, Nevis and St. Maarten where I frolicked on white sand beaches, wrote stories about politics and machete gangs...

...and played poker against sugar cane workers and corrupt politicians. It was a lovely experience.

If you are in a losing streak, I recommend you take some time off and go on a vacation. It really doesn't matter whether you take a cruise, visit family and friends, or hang out in the restaurants you enjoyed when you were a kid. It's all part of living and I assure yoou the time won't be wasted!

I don't plan to stay long in Pennsylvania. Legs doesn't like mangoes because they bring fleas and I am a mango fan. After a week or so I will load the car and head for my favorite stomping grounds, the Southwest.

I will drive through Texas and New Mexico, stop to have a candlelit dinner with a certain lovely woman in Clovis...

...and then push off for Phoenix where I plan to hook up with a photographer friend named Paul De Gruccio.

Paul and I fight a lot but it's out of love. We are thinking of starting up an independent film production company. He's a talented photographer and cinematographer and I can do the writing.

Excuse me while I take MY vacation.
