  • Some players never say a word during a tournament and other players don't stop talking.

I managed to squeeze a game in on PKR  yesterday night.  It was a 10 seater NL $1 buy in (I'll be writing about it in my blog later today) and we were down to about 5 players.

The blinds were huge at about 300/600 and my stack was dwindling fast.  I was BB and the player at Dealer position raised big.  I had nothing and folded.

Next time round I'm BB again and the same player raises my BB to steal it.  I know that he is using his position to steal my blinds and I decided to do something about it.

I folded and said in the chat "next time".

two hands later I added "so how much longer do you think you will get away with using position to raise me"

He never commented nor did anybody else.  I'm BB again.  Did he raise?

No he didn't - and he didn't raise again on my BB.

Chat really does have value when you can tell the other player you know what they are up to.

Have you ever used chat to help you?

  • I'm usually pretty quiet...unless I know some of the players or if a certain player is starting to get to me and then my mouth starts to run amuck LOL. I know that some players do this just to get to you but it has also been to my benefit to speak up sometimes and let them know,I can play that game too !! ;D :P :P

  • For me it depends on the tables vibe. Most of the times I'm quiet and concentrate on the game but if someone is bugging me I speak up.

  • I'm am quiet, concentrating on learning, but I came close to saying something to two non-English speaking players who cussed at a player that did say something... I do pay attention to the chat and see the way people use it in their game play.

  • Chat value to the fore again today!

There was a calling station two seats to my right so every time I'm BB he is dealer.  He called more or less every hand.

I was BB and he limped in.  I had rubbish so I didn't bother to raise.  He ended up winning the hand with trip 4s.  His hand was 45 off.  A few hands on and he had Q4 and won that hand with a pair of 4s.

I said to him "What is it with you and these 4s?".  He didn't respond.

Many hands on, I'm BB and I have Q4.  The player limps in (as usual) and the flop comes down 844.  I check.  He bets 400.  I said "4?".  He replied "8".  I took my time to call.  Turn comes down J.  He bets 800.  I take my time again and call.  The river is 2.  He bets 800 and I raise him all in.  He calls and loses against my trip 4s.

    I guess I made him think I didn't have the 4! LOL

  • Im a bit ashamed to admit it, but if i know a player is prone ot go on tilt, ill egg them on. Like when I win a hand against them or bluff them, sometimes ill show the bluff or throw a little sarcastic nice hand in there.

Other times ill use it to make people think im on tilt. Ill say something a little rude, nothing too bad, but just enough to make them think im on tilt. Ill go off in the chat for a hand or so, but im perfectly fine. i know it works when i get a response and it has worked to my advantage

  • The last time I posted in this thread... back in October 2011... I was a real newbie to poker and at that time had only considered saying something in chat. Since that time I have put a few more games under my belt and now do use chat to throw people off.

During the tourney I won my $75 in last night, see Bragging Thread, I did use chat... I told that raiser to my right that betting $30000 on my $10000 BB was "just plain mean" after he had done that the last couple of times I was BB... in a very nice way, but to make people think I might be on tilt.

He responded and by the time I said, "my moments are numbered..." he was cheering me on and telling me not to give up. In the end I think I made people think I was tilting in the opposite direction... to very nice and happy to be playing in the tourney (which I was)... LOL

  • Sussed out a player with a one liner today.

This game was on PKR - cheap buyin...really cheap.  I'm BB and he is SB.  3 of us left in the game.

He raises pre flop min raise and I call with 10Q suited.  Flop comes K24 and he bets huge so I folded.  I reckon he had ace rag and missed the flop but either way I was beaten.  I said "Nice continuation bet" and rather than tell me he had kings or a pocket pair or even dispute what I said, he says "thank you".  He really liked to give the game away which is fine by me LOL

  • Good one blue... I am always learning from you. This one gave me pause for thought, not only in what I might say, but how I might respond to someone else's comment. Thanks!

    Thanks Katt.

I was pretty amazed that he said thank you.  I would have certainly defended my hand or said nothing at all had it been said to me.  It also changed his game a little too.  Instead of raising my BB every hand, he would just flat call so I started raising pre-flop and he kept folding.  He was folding SB too after a few pre-flop raises by me.

Very interesting stuff I have to say.

LOL  He beat me though Katt.  I had pocket jacks and raised all in and he called with ace rag and hit his ace on the river. Boooo!

  • Darn the luck... darn the river... I got taken out with Queens and an opponent with Ace Rag catching the river just yesterday... I hear other fiddle music on that!  :`o

  • Good player 2 seats to my right...uses position to bet and has a huge chipstack.  He was SB and hit pocket aces, won the hand and knocked 2 players out.  He'd  been raising my BB most hands and I did re-raise all in with 9s at one point (and won).  Anyway, so he has just won with aces and he is now dealer.  I decided to be kind and hopefully stop him from raising my BB on the button.  i just said "nh" and he responded with a "ty".  He folded!

Do you think my "kindness" had the desired effect?

  • Blue I do think your "kindness" had an effect on that player. Chat has a lot to do with what goes on at a table I think.

Yesterday I was in a 1-up game that had been down to the last 4 players for-freaking-ever. I had a massive stack lead, so for me it was a matter of waiting for one of the other 3 to wipe out to end the game in the money. If I bet they would all fold and they just kept exchanging their smallish stacks with me making a play every now and then in an effort to end the game.

So... one player's name was STLcardsWS... after a bit of thought I started out by asking if the Cards were actually going to make it into the World Series... instant distracting conversation and 5 minutes later the never-ending game was a done deal...

  • Yes,I think so Blue!! I've always felt that nice words have a lot more of an effect than negative ones...even in poker!! LOL

@ Katt, nice to see you here again! I hope you are doing well.I was thinking of e-mailing you today...now I don't have to! ;)

Amazing!  Good job Katt.  A little distraction does a power of good sometimes and this time it paid off.  Well done.

Miss you,Ms.KittyKatt!! It's not the same without you to brighten our day!!

  • Can you believe I got called a donk for calling his Ace 4 with my KQ on a short stack game.  Then he had the nerve to tell me I got lucky with my pocket Kings against his Q10.

The game ended and I won and said "well at least I whooped your butt".  I think he'd gone by then but it made me feel better to say it.

Had any chat problems recently anyone?

  • Sounds like a donk himself... that kind of stuff is just so childish and in my opinion only goes to prove the name caller is a rookie poker player and a sorry person. I have run into a lot less name calling lately myself. Not sure why that is, but I think maybe it is because I play a bit higher buy-in games than I did at first.

  • Too funny blue.  I am sure he was just mad because he lost as you are anything but a donk.  These people with Ace rag that think it is a wonderful hand make me laugh.

  • Hi Blue, been awhile since I talked with you, I have had people go-off playing a freeroll. I believe certain people play the game online just so they can rant and rave anonymously. Also when a player starts with the name calling, I just tell them to put Mrs. in front of their insult and that usually stops the trash talk.(most of the time) Ex. when called donk , I reply that's  Mrs. donk  to you.  Its suppose to be all in fun.

    Sometimes where is the fun?

Nice to see you Katt - you have been missed!

I agree it was childish.  I agree too about the higher stakes players.  They seem to be more "adult" about the game.

    Hey there imakin1 - it's been a long time!

I like the "Mrs" idea - thanks for that.  I'll be sure to use it.

  • One player just said "I think it's fair to tell you; I've stopped listening to ZZ Top".  He did knock a player out afterwards and said "I did tell you!"  Not really sure what his implications were for that line.  Anyone any ideas?

  • 8) Well blue, perhaps he was indicating he was not stoned anymore? Or maybe just not singin' the blues these days... :z  More likely just something odd to say to distract other players... I mean, you were thinking about what he meant...  8'|

Well hello there Katt!  Long time no see - hope all is well with you.

You could be right or alternatively, he was saying that he wasn't being distracted any more.  Either way, he got my attention.

And you could be right, he may have turned down the music to concentrate on the game!
